Mahébourg is named after Bertrand-François Mahé de La Bourdonnais, one of the most successful governors of the French colonial period. It was originally built by the Dutch during their brief colonization period on the island. It was close to their port of landing, had an adequate water supply from numerous streams, and had beautiful seas. Mahébourg saw major improvement around 1806 amid the period of French colonization.
